Community Garden

We have partnered with Semken Landscaping to create a vibrant garden at our Broadmeadows site, to provide fresh produce to vulnerable people through our Emergency Relief Program.

About Second Seed

Semken Landscaping and Lentara UnitingCare (Lentara), have partnered to create Second Seed at our Broadmeadows location. Second Seed will provide much needed fresh food for our Emergency Relief Program. It serves a greater purpose than food production, it’s also about building a positive environment where the Lentara Community can come together to grow, share and make social change.

Lentara's Emergency Relief Program supports over 5,000 children and families annually by providing food and essential items. Hume City Council's Health and Wellbeing Plan 2013 - 2017 identified that Hume children were not eating the recommended fruit and vegetable serves and that a "secure, healthy and sustainable food system" is essential in effecting change. Second Seed aims to increase the fresh fruit and vegetables supplied to families through our Emergency Relief Program.

Second Seed is different from other Community Garden's. The positive outcome of this initiative will directly impact vulnerable children and families in our community. As Lentara strives to be at the forefront of Social Innovation, the Community Garden has the potential to become part of a larger sustainable food system in Melbourne's North Eastern Suburbs.

Our Vision

A world where individuals and families have access to locally grown, first-pick, fresh produce, regardless of their circumstances

Get Involved

There are many ways to help support Second Seed. We want to work with home growers, kindergartens, school, churches, businesses and other non-for-profit organisations to increase the supply of lovingly grown local produce, to the people who need it most. There are endless possibilities for growth and innovation in this space and we want to hear your ideas.

Be the Change

To bring our vision into fruition, we need your help. Maybe you don't know anything about gardening but you still want help - make a donation. Our initiative currently recieves no government funding or support from grants and trusts. So a donation of $20 or more can provide seedlings, tress, tools, mulch and raw materials for building.

Money isn't the only way you can help. Start your own fundraiser, become a member and recieve benefits, name our garden or donate materials. You can donate:

  • Seeds and seedlings for a variety or fruits, vegetables and herbs
