In 2013, Hotham Mission joined Lentara UnitingCare to form the Asylum Seeker Program, which provides care, support and aid to people seeking asylum while their claims for protection are being processed. Clients who receive our support often have no income, no rights to work, no rights to Medicare, no access to government assistance, no stable housing and significant physical or mental health issues.
The Asylum Seeker Program comprises two separate programs: The Asylum Seeker Project (ASP) and the Asylum Seeker Welcome Centre (ASWC). The ASWC is a drop-in centre in Brunswick, where clients can come to use the computers, share a meal, attend an excursion, ask for advice or just hang around and socialise, knowing they're in a safe space. The ASP is a more specialised service, where asylum seekers in need are provided with intensive care and support from our caseworkers. Clients are provided with Myki cards, cash allowances, food parcels and material donations- and our Home with a Heart housing program provides free long-term accomodation to asylum seekers with no other form of income.
